People will compare just about anything. Whether its MJ vs. LeBron, Chevy vs. Ford, Apple vs. Microsoft, or Cell phone hotspot vs. Karma device, the most important thing is to look at the facts. Fact is Karma offers two different devices, Karma Go and Karma Black, with several affordable data plan options. Cell phone providers also have numerous devices and offer multiple plans. While Cell phone providers offer similar options in this category, they are quite different from Karma.

Karma’s mobile hotspot devices allows users to run backups or updates on their computers and phones. Everyone with a smartphone has seen that message pop up before bed suggesting that you run a backup or update. As soon as you click run, it asks for you to connect to wifi. So why would you need to connect to wifi if your phone allows for you to surf the web, update your Facebook, post an Instagram, or even be used as a hotspot for you to check work emails when you don’t have access to wifi? Because at the end of the day, your phone is made for calls and texts. Karma’s mobile wifi devices are made to allow users to surf, stream, download, backup, connect to your TV, connect to your Roku, or even connect to your gaming device.

So, comparing your cell phone to a mobile hotspot is a lot like comparing apples to oranges. Yes, they are similar in the sense that they are both in data family just as apples and oranges are in the fruit family, but they are still very different. If you are using your Karma device for work, you can work longer and more efficiently than if you were using your cell phone as a hotspot. Remember that fine print in your contract with your cell phone provider? Throttle and cap. While major carriers will throttle or even cap your data after significant use Karma does not.

Cell phone providers can offer so called “unlimited” plans because it is much harder to consume copious amounts of data on a cell phone than it is on a mobile wifi device. You can’t stream 4k videos on your cell phone but with a mobile wifi device that is a breeze. It makes sense for these big cell phone carries to offer unlimited plans because they are counting on a significant percentage of people to under use their data and protect themselves with the throttle and data caps. They are banking on the under-utilization or “breakage” in the billing cycle. For a hotspot that is unreasonable. Sure, if you want to check emails here and there using your cell phone plan as a hotspot is adequate. But if you are intending to stream movies, download pictures to your drop box, or run a carbonite backup, a cellphone is not effective. The battery will drain, the quality of your videos will suffer, and you can forget that carbonite back up. The ultimate result is a dead phone when you need it for what it was meant to do. With a Karma device, all of these things are possible and it comes with the best rates in the hotspot sphere.
